A new identity and user interface for a hot music streaming startup.

Musi is a music streaming service that was founded in 2013 by one of our partners and Chief Creative Officer Christian Lunny. It quickly became one of the hottest music apps on the App Store. Today, Musi has over 4 million downloads and 1 million daily-active users.

Background

Musi is a music streaming service that was founded in 2013. It quickly became one of the hottest music apps on the App Store. Today, Musi has over 4 million downloads and 1 million daily-active users. The app allows people to listen to any song available on YouTube and organize their music into playlists. Musi wanted to make their branding more intelligible and simplify their user interface.

The Brand

After an in-depth look into the platform, we rebuilt Musi from the ground up, beginning with the iconic Musi “M” wave logo.

Intended to represent a sound wave, a play button, and the letter ‘M’, this logo mark has been the staple symbol in which users from all across the globe recognize the service. By taking the handwritten asymmetrical “M” and transitioning the singular shape into six perfectly proportioned rounded rectangles, we were able to accomplish the same representation while adding a modern and more refined aesthetic to the design. This design translated into the app store icon, the logo, and the rest of the application re-design.

User Interface

Musi’s user interface re-design was based upon the new brand and logo we developed.

The key to giving this familiar and friendly service a fresh coat of paint, was to deliver a better and more refined user interface while still retaining the same navigation and app elements. It was critical that users see the redesign as an improvement, allowing them to continue to use the app elements they were already familiar with, and appreciate the new aesthetic. Through the refinement of typography size and font choices, accent colours, newly designed icons, and the addition of a bottom player, we were able to usher Musi into the modern music app era.

A player designed in the likeness of native music functions, but with the ability to do much more.

A fully functioning ten band equalizer for audiophiles everywhere to use Musi as a tool to refine their favourite sounds.

App Feedback & Reviews

Shortly after the re-design, Musi listeners took to social media and the app store raving about the new layout, functionalities, and refined Musi Brand. As a consistent 4.5 star reviewed app on the App Store, Musi began receiving five star reviews from all across the globe, improving the app store rating average to a consistent five stars for the latest version.

CONCLUSION

With a fresh coat of paint, and redefined user experience this version of Musi is the best version to date. With raving five-star customer reviews, hundreds of thousands of new users joining the platform, and design inspiration publications featuring the innovative design language used by Musi in it’s latest version, the re-design had a substantially positive impact and influence on the app’s success.
